AM Inbox: Solemn anniversary
RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:
ShopPBS, 9/11 — September 11 - 5th Anniversary Collection
We’re trying to think of another major online retailer with the credibility to be able to market 9/11 merchandise without appearing to be exploitive. We can’t think of one. Thankfully no one else tried.

For those of you from outside the New York area, here’s a picture we took of the Tribute in Light last night from our vantage point in midtown:

Gap, 9/12 — Love Cashmere? Check Out Gap's New Collection.
In the sidebar of this email, Gap gives us their first mention of the Forth & Towne, their new brand targeting middle-aged women. Essentially this is their play for Chico’s FAS’s customers. The website is just a branding tool for the time being, offering pages about the history of the brand, its collections and locations, but no online store yet. But with just a handful of stores nationwide, we imagine that Forth & Towne will soon start selling online to make its clothing accessible to a much wider audience.

Nordstrom, 9/12 — Coat Shop: Uniformly Chic Free Shipping from Bobbi Brown (Details Inside)
Nordstrom is one of only a few retailers that have started pushing coats, but that’s not why we’re pointing out this email. It’s the subject line. Why say, “Details Inside”? Victoria’s Secret does this all the time and, frankly, it’s a bit insulting to the intelligence of subscribers. You mean you can actually OPEN emails and there are even more words inside?! No way! C’mon, it’s a waste of subject line real estate, it creates long, cluttered subject lines, and it creates the impression that you think your subscribers are idiots. (And don’t use an asterisk at the end of the subject line instead; that’s almost as bad.)
SUBJECTIVITY SCANNER:
EBags, 9/11 — Lift your spirit with a lighter load: 10% Off + Free Shipping
Kmart, 9/11 — Save on home touches + ship it for free
J. Crew, 9/11 — Suit-up for fall (shipping is free)
Alloy, 9/11 — ALL denim 20% OFF! limited time - shop now!
Orvis, 9/11 — A FREE Tee when you buy 2
Staples, 9/11 — 7-Day Online Savings Event
Saks Fifth Avenue, 9/12 — NEW Classic Sportswear Collections for Him
MLB, 9/12 — Majestic Athletic Collection - Wear what the pros wear.
