AM Inbox: Oopsy grand slam
RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:
MLB, 3/30 — Watch the Civil Rights Game LIVE on ESPN
I thought that Apple had a lock on the top spot in the 2007 Oopsy Hall of Fame with their Feb. 1 email, but it looks like the competition is heating up. This email from MLB.com arrived completely blank. They realized that they had goofed, so they resent the email on March 31. Unfortunately, it was still completely blank! Please, if you’re going to resend an email because of a mistake, make absolutely sure that the correction is 100% error-free.
Target, 4/1 — Free shipping on 15,000 lovely home touches, plus save $5 on your $50 order
Target appears to be trying out a tighter, more focused format for highlighting products and product categories following the top section of its emails. Instead of highlighting three products in each department as it had been doing, they are now highlighting only one with a slightly larger image, and positioning the product category links next to the image instead of over it. The sections are more clearly delineated in the new format, which I think makes it easier to read. The trade-off, of course, is that fewer items are being highlighted with images.
So you can see the difference for yourself, here’s yesterday’s email (left) next to an email from March 28:

REI is reminding subscribers of its environmental activism, telling them about their first-ever Stewardship report.
