AM Inbox: It adds up to better open rates

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

eBags, 8/1 — One-Day Sale Event: Up to 70% off + free shipping starts now.
Have a loyalty program or points program? Why not tie them into your email program so subscribers can see how many points they’ve accumulated. It gives them another reason to open your emails and increases the chance that they’ll use their points and interact more with your brand. Airlines like JetBlue and Continental Airlines do a good job of including this element in their emails, and I’m sure it helps encourage opens.

Of course, there are other things that you can provide counts for. For example, while I didn’t personally like 1-800-Flowers’ initiative to collect 1 million thank-yous for the troops, they could have used a counter to let people know where they were in terms of reaching their goal (see May 7 AM Inbox). Another idea, Gap and other retailers could have counters for how much money their merchandise sales have raised for (Product) Red. Has anyone seen other examples of these kinds of things in action? Other ideas?

HSN, 8/1 — Experience the New HSN.com... Enjoy the Future of Shopping!
HSN announces a redesign of their website. A chief component of the redesign appears to be the much more prominent use of video. I would expect many more links to videos to appear in their emails in the months ahead as a result.

Norm Thompson, 8/1 — Seen "the new silk"? Ooo-la-la, bamboo!
Whether it’s a soft eco-pitch like this or something that more directly appeals to subscribers’ social conscious, I continue to be surprised that I don’t see more eco-friendly products being promoted. This is an issue that’s garnering lots of media interest and tons of investment, but retailers were virtual no-shows for Earth Day this year and since then have been quiet on this issue. (Explore tag: Eco-friendly.)

FTD, 8/1 — Send a Friendly Bouquet for Only $29.99!
Consider this a reminder to preview your emails across (at least) all the major email readers before sending them out. Simple coding errors like this should be easy to catch and correct before they go out.

SUBJECTIVITY SCANNER:
Fingerhut, 8/1 — Comfortable college living made easy with Fingerhut.com!
Sony, 8/1 — Save up to $300 on a Sony VAIO student value pack.
Sears, 8/1 — Up to 20% Cash Back + Craftsman 80th Anniversary Sale
Diamond.com, 8/1 — Dazzling Peridot - Symbol of Happiness. SAVE an extra 20%.
Bluefly, 8/1 — Extra 15% off -The Pre-Fall Sale Event
