AM Inbox: Another apology from SmartBargains

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

SmartBargains, 10/30 — Please accept our apologies and an extra 20% off
This is SmartBargains’ second apology email in just over two months—although this one is apologizing for site performance rather than email problems, as was the case last time (see Aug. 28 AM Inbox). Road Runner Sports (see Oct. 19 AM Inbox), Chadwick’s (see Oct. 1 AM Inbox) and Norm Thompson (see Sept. 5 AM Inbox) also had site performance problems in recent months. Needless to say, if you don’t fix site performance problems now, you’re going to regret it during the holiday season, which now that Halloween is out to the way is going to heat up fast.

Avon, 10/30 — SAVE Up to 42% on ANEW Skin Smoothers & Plumpers + FREE SHIPPING
Avon introduces product reviews. Unlike many other retailers, Avon decided not to incentivize customers to write reviews at the onset. In fact, the banner announcing the program doesn’t even link to a landing page explaining how product reviews work, why customers should write reviews, or anything. (Explore tag: Product Reviews.)

Walgreens, 10/30 — Last-Minute Tricks + Treats Are In Store!
With Halloween upon us, Walgreens is driving subscribers to their stores for last-minute purchases. Walgreens also includes a link to their Halloween Safety Center and to their photo center, which is smart because Nov. 1 is the biggest day of the year for photo uploads.

Gap, 10/30 — Introducing Our New Outfit Collection
Recognizing that customers often don’t know how to put together decent outfits, Gap has introduced Editors’ Favorites, a collection of outfits. This approach not only makes customers feel more comfortable buying that sweater because they now have an idea of what to wear it with, but it may also lead to more sales by customers buying entire outfits or a couple of pieces of it. Email can be great at helping put your products in context for your customers.
