AM Inbox: Getting a little more out of the sender line

>>Two-Click Survey Results. Check out the results of our question about whether email is a “digital” platform, and weigh in on the next question: Do the benefits of list rental outweigh the risks?

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

HSN, 10/17 — The Holidays Are Here! Shop for the Season
HSN has changed their sender name to “HSN Holidays,” whereas they typically use either “HSN Weekly” or “HSN Specials”—although they’ve also used “HSN Clearance,” “HSN Fashion” and plain ol’ “HSN” within the past three months. Using a consistent sender name helps subscribers quickly recognize that yours is one they want. However, I’m thinking that the initial “HSN” branding is enough to get that recognition. Then adding other terms behind the “HSN” just supplements the subject line. This seems like a crafty way to get more out of the sender line.

Also, in this email, they also appear to be abandoning their usual blue bar section heading in favor of red text. You can see the blue section bar in the Aug. 17 AM Inbox about HSN’s email redesign.

KB Toys, 10/16 — Hurry, Halloween Offers End Soon
This is a really good, fun use of animation in a secondary item. It’s not in your face and it doesn’t immediately draw the eye. Instead it gives you a few seconds to scan the email and then it strikes (pun intended). Also important, if this email were viewed in Outlook 2007 and the animation was blocked, no content would be lost, just the eye-attracting effect.

And here’s the animated portion of that email:
