Season Finale: Columbus Day 2007
A look back on seasonal trends, email activity and standout B2C marketing:
Start to finish: The first reference to Columbus Day was on Oct. 3 from Macy’s. The final reference was on Oct. 17 from Furniture.com.
The distribution curve: Retailers sent the majority of Columbus Day-themed emails after Oct. 5. The biggest day for Columbus Day emails was Friday, Oct 5, followed by Monday, Oct. 8.

Noteworthy trend: My tracking data around Columbus Day 2006 isn’t super fantastic, but it appears that this year there were more than twice as many Columbus Day sale references. That could signal that retailers are trying to clear out excessive inventory after a slow summer to make way for Christmas goods. It could also signal that retailers are trying to get in some extra sales now, believing the forecasts of a weak Christmas holiday season. In general I see it as a bearish sign.
Standout subject lines:
SmartBargains, 10/8 — Final hours of the Columbus Day Sale. Don't be stranded.
Bluefly, 10/8 — Last Day-Columbus Day Sale: Extra 15% off Denim, Coats & Jackets, and Dresses
