AM Inbox: Dressed to swill

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

Banana Republic, 11/29 — Season's best looks for every occasion...
Amid with the constant stream of emails to help you find gifts for friends and family, there are emails like this that help you dress up yourself or your home for the holiday season. In this email, Banana Republic shows off a few different looks that are relevant to the holiday season.

Saks Fifth Avenue, 11/29 — Get All Dressed Up
Sak’s creative is a lot less energetic, but they smartly tie party-wear to hostess gifts. You’ll also notice at the top of the email a brief mention of Hanukkah, which starts on the evening of Dec. 4 this year.

Home Depot, 11/29 — Great Holiday Gifts That Ship for Free!
Home Depot announces their Home Depot $25,000 Holiday Gift Card Contest, which allows people to make videos about the projects around the house. The best video wins a $25,000 gift card. Submissions opened on Nov. 10 (and close on Dec. 15), but this is the first mention in their email marketing that I’m aware of. This is a very smart contest, because it gets people thinking deeply about home improvement projects they’d like to do. The contest participants are therefore much more likely to undertake those projects than they were before they entered.

This contest is similar to TigerDirect’s video contest, where people created videos about why they really need a computer (see Aug. 21 AM Inbox). TigerDirect also ran their contest through YouTube, sparing them from having to host the videos and getting them exposure to the YouTube audience.

I know crate and barrel sometimes appears on your scanner...just curious if you have been spammed with their sister brand CB2 as many others I've talked to. Appears they've used the regular list to tout the new brand?

Yes, Crate & Barrel regularly sends CB2 emails to their Crate & Barrel subscribers. It's not a good permission practice and frankly causes blurring between the brands, which could lead to CB2 cheapening the Crate & Barrel brand.

However, I personally find that case to be way less disconcerting than Gap Inc. sending Piperlime emails to all their Banana Republic, Gap and Old Navy subscribers; and 1-800-Flowers Inc. sending Plow & Hearth and Popcorn Factory emails to their 1-800-Flowers subscribers. I think those are more likely to generate unsubscribes and spam complaints.
