Alibris, 12/17 — Book lover, search Alibris for books you thought you'd never find!
When you finish your emails take a look at your subject line and your headline. If your headline is way better than your subject line that should get you thinking. I think that’s the case in this email, which had a headline of “Read books that blew the roof off of 2007.” To me that’s much more specific and engaging than again stressing that Alibris can help you find hard-to-find books. “Book lover, read the most controversial books of 2007” would have been better yet—and more accurate, since their list includes Christopher Hitchens’ God Is Not Great: How Religion Poisons Everything
and Walter Mosley’s Killing Johnny Fry: A Sexistential Novel
. Who isn’t interested in controversy?

Free expedited and express shipping on some products can really kill your margins, but offering them on certain lighter products doesn’t hurt nearly as much. In this email, eBags promotes a selection of products that qualify for free 2nd day air upgrades. Harry & David did this as well in an email yesterday.

Hanukkah often falls around the same time as Christmas, which means that you can usually promote the two holidays together, as in this gift card promotion from HPshopping. However, this year Hanukkah began at sundown on Dec. 4 and ended last week. Promoting gifts for Hanukkah at this point makes you look ignorant and perhaps a bit insensitive. Please be careful.

I love Smith-Harmon's enthusiasm. It's so great to have a connection with people who really "get" and get excited by email marketing. (Truly, there are not that many of us out there!) I count myself very lucky to have found such accomplished enthusiasts to collaborate with on the REI program. They are helping to bring amazing opportunities to fruition with panache.
