RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 of the top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:
Harry & David, 12/6 — Today ONLY: Save on our Santa Sweets Tower!
In the 2007 Guide to Gearing Up for the Holiday Email Season, I recommended using animated gifs more during the holiday selling season because they help retailers stand out in the inbox. Last year there was a trend toward using animation more during the holidays and that’s certainly the case again this year. In addition to Harry & David, other retailers that have used animated gifs in their November and December emails thus far include Avon, Art.com, Blair, Chadwick’s, Coldwater Creek, Lands’ End, Macy’s, Norm Thompson, Office Depot, Orvis, REI, Target and Wal-Mart.

Here’s the animated portion of that email:

Avon, 12/6 — FREE SHIPPING during our 12 Days of Christmas: The Gift of GLAMOUR
Avon has adopted an animated header for their “12 Days of Christmas” campaign. An animated header may be advantageous because it can catch subscribers’ attention in preview panes. Blair is also using an animated header for their holiday emails. See the Dec. 13 AM Inbox to see how Avon’s “12 Days” campaign this year compares to last year’s.

Here’s the animated portion of that email:

Home Depot, 12/6 — 25% Off Holiday Decor!
“Live Tree’s”???!!! Elementary school grammar teachers everywhere are writhing in pain. Clearly this was just a slip. More egregious is the regular misspelling of “100s,” “1,000s” and “TVs” that I see from some retailers who think these need an apostrophe-S to pluralize them. So here’s the rule if you don’t know it: Single numbers and letters are pluralized with an apostrophe-S, while strings of two or more letters or numbers are pluralized with a simple S. For example: “All these products earned A’s.” “We stock 100s of Blu-ray DVDs.”
