After inducting the 2007 class into the Oopsy Hall of Fame a little while ago, we already have another oopsy for our next class. In this email there’s a coding or rendering problem that pushes the main body down, making it appear in the preview pane that the email is blank. On the upside, Cooking.com thankfully has a preview pane message that includes a “Can’t see the image? Click here.” message.
Sam’s Club, 1/18 — Sam's Club & BIGresearch 2008 Member Satisfaction Survey
From time to time I get emails from 3rd party research firms doing surveys on behalf of retailers. Often they are sending from their own address rather than the retailer’s and using their own email template and branding. For those reasons, I often I find these in my junk folder. Here Sam’s Club takes a different tack and one that likely to be more successful. Sam’s Club sends the email from their usual address and uses their branding on the email. This tactic improves deliverability and recognition, which should lead to higher survey participation rates.

I’ve seen retailers like Orvis (see Oct. 5 AM Inbox) and Sears (see May 3 AM Inbox) incentivize subscribers to write product reviews, but Northern Tool is the first I’ve seen to add an additional incentive to review products with no reviews yet.

In contrast to HSN’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day email last Thursday (see Jan. 18 AM Inbox), this email from Target is supportive, not exploitive.

Sporting very similar subject lines, NFLshop and Sports Authority were the first retailers out with news of the Super Bowl matchup. (Go, Giants!)
