The RetailEmail Index fell 13% to 180 during the week ending Jan. 4, and is down 36% from where it was four weeks ago. The Index score indicates that on average the top 100 online retailers each sent 1.8 promotional emails last week. With most of the holiday email froth now cleared, retail email volumes should rebound a little next week.

RetailEmail Participation Rates: Last week, 88% of the retailers in the RetailEmail Index send out at least one promotional email, down from 91% the week prior, and down from 96% during the 4-weeks-ago period.

Christmas (Dec. 25): I’m still not bothering to count holiday references, but there are very few at this point, just the last of the after-Christmas sales references.
New Year’s (Jan. 1): The retailers in the RetailEmail Index sent 74 emails referencing New Year’s last week, up from 22 the prior week.
Other things referenced by retailers: winter sports, fitness, health, HDTVs, resort wear, spring previews
