AM Inbox: Score some time away from the guys

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

RedEnvelope, 2/3 — Score FREE SHIPPING on Game Day
There were several emails that played off the Super Bowl over the weekend (see Scanner below), but this was one of the cleanest and best executed. It clearly conveys the idea that while the guys are having guy-time watching the game (the Giants rock!), that you can have girl-time shopping and relaxing.

Sephora, 2/2 — Beauty blitz! Free shipping over $25 during the big game
Sephora was also playing off the Super Bowl but something clearly went wrong here. It would appear that at least one image never got coded into the email—or perhaps it’s displaying the text version of the message rather than the HTML version. That said, that message that survives the error is totally not actionable.

Urban Outfitters, 2/1 — All New: Skull Set + Urban Outfitters
Urban Outfitters has started a Flickr group where people can upload pictures of themselves styling Urban Outfitters clothing. It’s a novel community-building idea that I haven’t seen any other retailer attempt. Gap, Abercrombie & Fitch and a few other retailers have tried to find modeling talent among their subscribers and customers. I wonder if a Flickr group like Urban Outfitters’ would be fertile ground for finding such talent. On the downside, in this email, when you click through the Flickr banner you’re dropped off on the Urban Outfitters site first and you have to locate and click on a small banner for the Flickr pool at the bottom of the page to actually get there. So it’s a little user-unfriendly.
