AM Inbox: Dell introduces new preference center

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

Dell, 3/7 — We're Listening - Get Dell Email Tailored to Your Preferences
In additional on changing their sender address, Dell announces that they’ve updated their subscription center, adopting several best practices that they hadn’t embraced before. Here’s the email announcing the new subscription center…

…and here’s what their new subscription center looks like. Based on data collected for the 2007 Retail Email Subscription Benchmark Study, this is the first time that Dell has presented topic preferences and the ability to see sample emails. Their Dell Notes newsletter also appears to be new, so lots of positive changes here.

Circuit City, 3/9 — Save up to 70% during our Outlet Blowout!
Looks like Circuit is experimenting with or outright changing their email headers. The new one dispenses with their whitelisting instructions—in fact, abandons all preheader HTML text. They add a prominent “shop by phone” message and move the message about their weekly ads and sweepstakes from just below the navigation bar, to just above it. That frees up space for a message about free shipping and in-store pickup. Still no “view this email online” link. That would have also been a good addition.

Here’s the new header…

Bluefly, 3/7 — This Just In: New Arrivals for Spring - Kooba, Nicole Miller, Prada...
Finally there’s another major online retailer besides Urban Outfitters that understands how to link content in their emails to content on their blog. I was very happy to see this banner linked to Flypaper, Bluefly’s blog, and to this post in particular for this video. Linking from your emails to your blogs engages customers in another digital channel and increases their engagement overall with your brand. Hopefully we’ll see more retailers doing this soon. This is one area where B2B marketers are way ahead of B2C marketers.
