J. Crew, 3/3 — New arrivals (ready to be wowed?)
I believe this is not the first time that J. Crew has given subscribers a peek behind a photo shoot. Several other retailers, including Abercrombie & Fitch (see Nov. 10, 2006 AM Inbox), have also given folks a behind the scenes look at a photo shoot, either in video form or as a photo spread. In this case, J. Crew uses a splash page to share images from the making of the photo shoot. These behinds the scenes look add a bit of personality to the brand and makes readers feel special.
Also worth noting is the placement of J. Crew’s navigation bar. Rather than at the top of the email—like pretty much everyone else that uses a nav bar—they put theirs at the bottom of their emails. I assume this is so that their emails are more readable with images turned off, whereas normally the top of the email would be cluttered with link and image coding from the nav bar. However, their failure to use alt tags lessens that advantage significantly.

This is a good example of how to promote a few minor holidays along with a few major ones. Harry & David also wisely points out that Easter falls early this year—in fact it’s the earliest Easter since 1913. The early Easter will likely catch some consumers off guard.
