Crutchfield, 4/4 — Price Drops we thought you'd want to hear about
Branding in the “from” line is critical to recognition in the inbox, but you can go a step farther in some cases. For instance, some retailers name their newsletters, like Wal-Mart with their “Wal-Mart Wire” emails, and use that as their sender name. Crutchfield also goes beyond simple branding with their “The Crutchfield Team” sender name. Crutchfield regularly features pictures of staff members in their emails, so the “team” sender name reinforces their brand image of them being a team of people, rather than a faceless brand. I’ve written before about brands trying to humanize themselves (see May 1 AM Inbox), and this is just another way in which Crutchfield does that.
Saks Fifth Avenue, 4/6 — Saks Fifth Avenue New York Store Events
Every month Saks sends out these New York store events emails to let people in the NYC area know what’s going on at their flagship store. There’s always a lot going on, but I’ve always wondered if they were missing some opportunities. First, how about links to find out more about some of these events and the speakers? Or how about links to find out more about the designers or collections involved? And finally, how about an email reminder service? Some of these events are more than two weeks away. A reminder might be nice, and it would give Saks a way to gage interest and collect behavioral data on the subscriber. If someone asks for a reminder for the Graeme Black trunk show on April 18, then it probably makes sense to follow up with an email pitching Graeme Black products a day or two after the event.

This is a great example of an email that’s well-designed for preview panes and above-the-fold action. It has a free shipping banner, prominent branding, and a few opportunities to engage with the main message.
