AM Inbox: EB Games’ Gmail grimace

RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:

EB Games, 4/8 — EB Games Weekly Newsletter 4.8.08
I don’t know if the email designer for EB Games participated in the Email Standards Project’s just-released Project Gmail Grimace video, but they should have. This is what their emails look like when viewed in Gmail. There are alignment problems and then the lists in the sidebar just fall apart the further into the email you go. As an email designer, that should make you wince. It’s also a sign that EB Games isn’t testing their emails across platforms or using a rendering tool, otherwise they would have spotted and fixed this ongoing problem.

EB Games also continues to test subject lines. They’re clearly trying to decide whether to stick with their standard “nothing but the date changes” subject line or switch to something more dynamic that highlights the unique content in the email. For instance, the other subject line that they tested for this email was “EB Games News: From the City to the Savanna: All Manners of Wild Life.” EB Games has been testing this for months off and on.

Sports Authority, 4/8 — SportsAuthority.com: Get Kansas Jayhawks Champions Gear
Sports Authority apparently suffered a coding error that scrambled part of their message and wiped out all the legalese at the bottom of their email—including their mailing address and unsubscribe link, making this email in violation of CAN-SPAM. TigerDirect suffered a similar coding error last year that put them in violation of CAN-SPAM as well (see July 9 AM Inbox). This is just one more reason to test flight all your emails before sending them out.
