Tiffany, 4/25 — Shop Tiffany Gift Ideas
Sparked by the Email Standards Project’s release of the 2008 Gmail Appeal video on April 9, I’ve pointed out several examples this month of how Gmail can mangle emails—from rendering text so that it’s illegible to the design being broken apart so you have to scroll horizontally to read it (see April 21 AM Inbox, April 14 AM Inbox and April 9 AM Inbox). Add to this lineup of crime scene photos, this email from Tiffany that has Gmail’s ad tower encroaching upon the email. And this isn’t a one-time occurrence for Tiffany. Many of their emails appear this way in Gmail. Until Gmail comes out with more robust support for HTML and CSS standards, I encourage everyone to do a pre-flight check of their emails in Gmail (along with the other major email clients) or run their emails through a rendering tool to ensure they render as you expect.

Neiman Marcus, 4/25 — The ARTISTRY trend with a Fendi twist + EARN A $200 GIFT CARD
In addition to using an animated gif to great effect, Neiman Marcus also links to their NM Insite blog for more information and an opportunity to comment on the handbag. Great email.

Here’s the animated portion of that email:

Alloy, 4/25 — Style File: Beach Exotic + Free Shipping (No min. purchase)
Starting with an April 23 email, Alloy is the latest retailer to add a preheader message to their emails (Explore tag: Preheaders). Unlike most other retailers with preheader messages, which summarize the main call-to-action of the email, Alloy places their preheader message after a “click to view online” link and whitelisting instructions. If they had placed it before those, the preheader message would have shown up as the snippet text in Gmail and other email clients that show the first line of text of emails.

Chadwick’s, 4/25 — Top Brands in Every Size + a Special Offer
Redcats USA, which owns Chadwick’s a variety of other apparel retailers, is using their email channel to announce the launch of OneStopPlus.com, which is a “mall” that brings together products from all their brands.

Circuit City, 4/27 — Pack the car! Spring Price Breaks on vacation essentials
Here in New York, spring break was last week. So this is at least a week too late—and probably two—to be relevant to me. If you don’t have sufficient customer information to segment on something as varied as when spring break occurs, it’s probably better to be early than late.
