AM Inbox: L.L. Bean and CompUSA redesigns
>>I’m back in action after speaking at the MarketLive eCommerce Summit in Half Moon Bay, Calif., on Tuesday. This should get us mostly caught up…
RetailEmail.Blogspot monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from our inbox this morning:
L.L. Bean, 4/15 — FREE Gift Card + Wrinkle-Free Twills from $29.95
In unison with a relaunch of their website, L.L. Bean has redesigned their emails, dropping the vertical navigation menu in favor of a horizontal nav bar. Abandoning the two-column design appears to be the biggest change beyond the new header. Here’s the new design (left) and the old design from an April 8 email:

CompUSA, 4/15 — RAZR $99...XBOX 360 $249...HP 22" LCD $249 & More
On Monday I discussed CompUSA’s decision to drop the logo from the top of their emails (see April 14 AM Inbox). Well, it appears that instead of making a poor decision, they made a coding error while introducing a new logo and nav bar. That error caused the new header not to load. This should be a reminder to be extra careful when making any changes to your templates. Here’s what the new header and design looks like:

Bluefly, 4/14 — EXTRA 10% OFF Everything Onsite: Tax Relief Sale -- Up to 60% Off
Bluefly offered a little tax relief to subscribers with this Tax Day-themed email, which as nearly identical to what they did last year (see April 17, 2007 AM Inbox). Chadwick’s, DisneyShopping, Ralph Lauren, Spiegel and Walgreens also used Tax Day messaging.

Sharper Image, 4/14 — Driving With Phone Worse Than DUI
I don’t know if Sharper Image segmented this email, sending it only to subscribers in or near states where it’s illegal to drive and use a cellphone without a hands-free system, but that would be an interesting twist on traditional demographic segmentation tactics. This email is certainly more relevant to people in or near those states.

RitzCamera, 4/14 — Introducing Our Monthly Electronics Deals Newsletter
RitzCamera has debuted a monthly Electronic Deals Newsletter to supplement their regular promotional emails.

Urban Outfitters, 4/14 — See the light...
Urban Outfitters has dropped the “Blog” link from their navigation bar. They were one of the few retailers to prominently promote their blog’s content. I wonder if this means that they may be looking to deemphasize their blog or wind it down.

SUBJECTIVITY SCANNER:
Chadwick’s, 4/14 — Need a Tax Break? Relief is here! Take $30 off & $4.99 shipping
Spiegel, 4/15 — A Tax Day Treat: Extra 10% OFF Any Purchase!
