AM Inbox: JCPenney redesigns email header
The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
JCPenney, 9/3 — Only 3 Days Left for Free Shipping & Start Saving at Our Big Fall Blitz
Starting with an Aug. 28 email, JCPenney has redesigned their header, including their navigation bar. The new nav whittles their department links down from 12 to seven, and adds a link to their outlet. JCPenney pulls their Sephora and American Living links out of the nav bar and positions them directly under the nav, using their logos to make them stand out more. They also move their “store ad” and “forward to a friend” links up to the header; they were toward the bottom of their emails before. Lastly, they added a “store locator” link, which amazingly they didn’t appear to have before. While this new header doesn’t match the one on their website exactly, it’s pretty close—and it matches the style of the website’s header, which is the important thing.

Here’s the old header from an Aug. 12 email:

Circuit City, 9/3 — Hut! Hut! Countdown to kickoff deals + bonus TV coupon
In addition to offering 24-minute in-store pickup, in this email Circuit City is offering discounts of $50 to $150 on TVs if you select in-store pickup. It’s the first time I’ve noticed a top online retailer using an additional incentive to get customers to use in-store pickup services.
