AM Inbox: Bloomingdale's Ho Sale
>>What is your most successful list-building tactic? Organic, viral or acquisition? Let us know by taking the latest Two-Click Survey on the eec homepage.
The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
Bloomingdale’s, 10/15 — Lowest Prices Of The Season & More
Need another reason to design for preview panes and above-the-fold viewing? Here you go: Bloomingdale’s is holding a ho sale—or at least that’s how this email reads before you scroll down. Here’s what you see above the fold (and most preview panes show you a lot less than mine)…

…and here’s the rest of the email:

A tip of the hat to Ryan Keiser of Vector Marketing for pointing this out to me.
Montgomery Ward, 10/14 — Welcome, to the NEW Montgomery Ward Website!
When I get beyond the unnecessary comma in the subject line, this is what I see when I look at this email. I bet it doesn’t give subscribers much faith in the improvements made to Wards.com when their emails look like this. Done poorly, email marketing can definitely harm your brand.

Crate & Barrel, 10/14 — The latest Trends to Fall in love with
In a thin preview pane banner, Crate & Barrel announced that they’ve redesigned their website. Since they don’t explain the improvements, I assume that the changes are minimal and mainly cosmetic.

HSN, 10/14 — Holiday Headquarters / Decor + 100s of Gifts + FREE SHIPPING on Toys
HSN bucks the best practice of keeping your sender name the same, using “HSN” plus another word to better describe the content of the email before the subscriber even looks at the subject line. For instance, this is the first email this year to carry the “HSN Holiday” sender name, indicating that the email is about holiday deals. Over the course of this year they’ve also used “HSN Games” (for their sweepstakes), “HSN Weekly,” “HSN Clearance” and occasionally plain old “HSN.” Last year they also used “HSN Instant Win Game,” “HSN Specials,” and “HSN Fashion.” Buy.com uses the same tactic, using different sender names (but the same sender address!) depending on the type of content in the email.
Newegg, 10/14 — 24-hour Madness! $48.00 SanDisk 4GB MP3 Player, $179.99 Seagate 1.5TB HDD & more
With this email, Newegg has replaced the “This Week’s Prize Giveaway” button with a “Preference Center” button. To see the prior version of their nav bar, check out the Aug. 20 AM Inbox. With this move, Newegg joins Overstock in having the link to their preference center above the fold (see Aug. 19 AM Inbox).

Gap, 10/15 — What Will You Vote For?
Gap, which has subtly gotten into politics before, wades into political waters again with this “Vote for” promotion. In addition to the tees, Gap is also offering digital “Vote for” buttons that you can add to your Facebook page.

Go through the signup process for the Ward.com email.
They seem to loose all brand value there too.
