AM Inbox: First reference to Black Friday
>>What is your most successful list-building tactic? Organic, viral or acquisition? Let us know by taking the latest Two-Click Survey on the eec homepage.
The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
Ralph Lauren, 10/17 — Plan Ahead For Our Midnight Madness Event
Ralph Lauren gives us our first reference to Black Friday with this email about their Midnight Madness Event, which starts at midnight on Nov. 28. The other interesting thing about this email is the Create Your Carpool call-to-action. This is a viral tactic that I haven’t seen before—and one that correctly acknowledges that visits to outlet malls are group outings.

Dell, 10/17 — Days of Deals - $449 off an XPS M1530 for Two Days Only!
This deal of the day email does the work of three emails by (1) letting you take advantage of yesterday’s deal, (2) giving you a shot at today’s deal, and (3) alerting you to what the next day’s deal will be. That’s how you can run a deal-of-the-day promotion on your website without sending out daily emails. That said, this format would also be useful for those retailers who are sending out a daily deals email series. It would give busy subscribers another chance at yesterday’s deal while building excitement about the next day’s email and deal.

REI, 10/17 — Suit Up for Winter at REI + Free Music Downloads
Taking a page out of the Urban Outfitters and Starbucks playbook, REI adds audio to the REI experience, engaging subscribers with an additional sense.

Macy’s, 10/17 — Guzzle the savings at our One Day Sale: save 20-65% + Web Busters!
“Guzzle”? Like “gas guzzler”? Like “guzzle beer until you forget your troubles”? That seems like an extremely negatively charged word, particularly at the moment.
