Season Finale: Columbus Day 2008

A look back on seasonal trends, email activity and standout B2C marketing:

Start to finish: The first reference to Columbus Day was on Oct. 3 by Old Navy. The final reference was on Oct. 14.

The distribution curve: The biggest day for Columbus Day emails was Friday Oct. 10. Retailers sent the majority of their Columbus Day-themed emails after Oct. 10.

Most interesting email: Columbus Day is a pretty subdued selling season, but there were a few emails worth mentioning. First, in this Oct. 10 email, Norm Thompson used some animation to have a little fun and draw some attention.

Then there was this Oct. 4 email from Old Navy that used 1492 as the upper price point for their Columbus Day sale:

And lastly, in this Oct. 13 email, notice how Road Runner Sports puts the “Forward to a Friend” link on par with the “Shop the Sale” link. Pulling your FTAF link into the main message on occasion should boost pass-alongs significantly and gives folks that aren’t in the market an alternative call-to-action.
