AM Inbox: DRAFT - NOT FINAL
>>What is the most successful list-building tactic? See the answer.
The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
RedEnvelope, 10/7 — RedEnvelope RedBox Rewards
We travel back in time a month to look at this rewards email from RedEnvelope. My Oopsy Hall of Fame has a few examples of emails that went out the door not totally baked, but this is the first email I’ve seen that was still in the “DRAFT” stage and clearly labeled as such, complete with subject line options. Thankfully they were able to complete the baking process and send out a final version shortly after this one went out. Everyone makes mistakes from time to time, but make sure that you have a robust process in place to minimize these slips.

Tip of the hat to Dianna Dar for sharing this with me.
Orvis, 11/10 — Easy Free Shipping: No Minimum. No Limit.
This is the second email that I’ve seen recently that asks subscribers to “save this email” so that they can clickthrough it later and repeatedly. It’s a novel idea that goes against the status quo of the time-limited, “read and delete” nature of promotional emails. If you’re able to convince your subscribers that your emails are worth saving, then that’s a major psychological victory.
As an aside, it looks like something went awry on their design. The four central images look like they got bumped to the right by the placement of the free shipping “sticker.” The poor little girl on the end was cut right in half!

Sam’s Club, 11/10 — Get a head start on your gift giving season with Sam's Club
Sam’s Club is the latest retailer to ask their subscribers to update their preferences, which is a great trend to be seeing. However, they pick a strange spot for this call-to-action; it’s nestled between two blocks of category products. It’s clearly commenting on the selection of products presented, but I wonder if it gets a bit lost.

SUBJECTIVITY SCANNER: Select noteworthy subject lines
HSN, 11/10 — The Most-Wanted Holiday Gifts (Unwrap Now!)
Crate & Barrel, 11/10 — Razzle dazzle holiday dinnerware. Plus Free Shipping.
Fingerhut, 11/10 — Decorate for the holidays with Fingerhut
J. Crew, 11/10 — New arrivals + gift guide
Home Depot, 11/10 — Free Shipping on Select Holiday Decor + More
Nordstrom, 11/10 — Free Holiday Shipping (Details Inside) Half-Yearly Sale: Save 40% or more
Coldwater Creek, 11/10 — $30 off + Favorite holiday looks (at fabulous prices!)
