Stat Source: Channel strengths, transactional emails, etc.
Retail email marketing statistics and benchmarks from the past month:
Stat: Social networks do not drive consumers to make purchase decisions. They may influence purchase decisions through branding, customer service, etc. But, as a direct marketing vehicle, social networks simply aren’t the right vehicle to drive purchase decisions. Source: More Data: Channels Influencing Purchases by Age post on the Email Research Center blog
>>Consumers are more open to promotions received via email than via social networks, where they expect more branding and information sharing. Make sure that your messaging in each channel plays to that channel’s strengths.
Stat: Transactional emails have the ability to generate an additional $2.9 million dollars annually for a retailer. Source: JupiterResearch’s The Transactional Messaging Imperative
>>Don’t underestimate the ability of your transactional emails to sell products. But focus on products that complement the one(s) about which the transaction email is about.
Stat: 77% of consumers describe themselves as "Green," actively living their lives conscious of their health and environment, and 57% have made a Green purchase in the past 6 months. Source: Yahoo! Green Study
>>Try sending emails with green messaging—and not just around Earth Day and New Year’s. I’ve seen a lot more green messaging in retailers’ email marketing over the past two years, which is a good sign that they’re not missing this sales opportunity. Explore Eco-friendly tag.
Stat: The gift card market will shrink by 5% compared to last year. Approximately 50% of consumers would consider purchasing a gift card from a retailer if it comes with an additional coupon/discount for them. Source: Archstone Consulting’s 2008 Holiday Gift Card Survey
>>Beyond just selling gift cards, think of ways to package promotions around them, using them as incentives or providing incentives to sell gift cards.

Chad, very well put. I definitely enjoyed how you provided the facts and gave nice well thought conclusions.
Social networks are great for many things but selling is not one of them. Consumers look to these networks for social interaction, they are not looking to make buying decisions there. Yes they might get feedback on a product or a service in these networks but they will rely on their own connections for that. They are not looking for marketers to market to them.
ps- would love it if you had the subscribe to comments via email option!
