The Retail Email Index rose 9% to a new all-time high of 391 during the week ending Dec. 19, 2008, and is up 42% from where it was four weeks ago. The Index score indicates that the top 100 online retailers sent more than 3.9 promotional emails each on average last week. This past week should be the peak of the holiday email season. Over the next couple of weeks, the Index should plunge back to more typical readings of around 220.

The Retail Email Participation Rate: Friday—which was the last day for guaranteed Christmas delivery for many retailers—was the most popular day to send retail emails last week.

The Retail Email Seasonality Meter: With many shipping deadlines now past, Christmas references should quickly dwindle in the days ahead. New Year’s references should increase next week, really taking off starting the day after Christmas.

Other things referenced by retailers: shipping deadlines, gift cards, toys, coats, boots, holiday parties
