AM Inbox: OfficeMax and Art.com make site changes
>>Retail Welcome Email Benchmark Study released. Read the Executive Summary and download the study for free.
The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
OfficeMax, 3/10 — Free Gift with Purchase - Shop the New OfficeMax.com
Starting with a March 8 email, OfficeMax has redesigned their emails, changing mainly their preheader and header. In the preheader they’ve added a “view on a mobile device” link, which makes sense given their core audience of SMBs. In the header, they’ve added a “Paper” link to their navigation bar and changed their “Weekly Ad” and “Store Locator” links to that they’re rendered in HTML text, so they show up when images are blocked. These changes coincide with changes to OfficeMax.com, although they don’t say what those changes are in this email. Here’s the new design:

And here’s the old design from a March 3 email:

Art.com, 3/10 — 20% Off + New Ways to Find the Art You Want
The anthem of good writing is “Show, don’t tell.” Art.com puts that maxim to good use in this email, not only telling subscribers about the new ways that they can search for artwork, but showing them three examples of what’s possible. Contrast this to OfficeMax’ email, which doesn’t tell you what’s new about their site.

TigerDirect, 3/10 — New Trend Saves Money...Acer 22" LCD $139...Acer Netbook $239...More Deals
Adjusting the fact that consumers are spending less, TigerDirect plays up the money-saving opportunities in refurbished electronics. The newspaper design really stands out and the coffee cup call-to-action is great. In addition to the timely messaging, also note that they’ve added a Facebook link to their group of social sharing links at the top of the email.
