The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:

This Monday a number of retailers held Cyber Monday 2 promotions in attempt to further leverage the Cyber Monday brand. In addition to this email from TigerDirect, retailers that promoted CM2 included Kmart, Sam’s Club and Sears, which held a “Better Than Cyber Monday” Sale. This is not a new trend, as several retailers used this tactic last year with both Cyber Monday and Black Friday. An Internet Retailer article provides some evidence that the tactic is working.
Walgreens, 12/7 — Become a Fan on Facebook, Get Free Shipping All Day Long
Speaking at the Email Insider Summit this week, Walgreens’ senior manager of retention marketing, Matthew Kirsch, mentioned this email and how it was less than successful. Apparently, Walgreens customers didn’t think that free shipping was much of an incentive, even though Walgreens doesn’t offer it very often. I would caution retailers from using giveaways and sweepstakes to build their social media followings. Just like with email marketing, sign-up incentives attract low-quality fans. Instead, I’d advise spurring interaction between fans.

This is a great example of boosting subscriber engagement with non-promotional content. This is also the kind of content that can drive interest in and engagement with social networks.

I love Smith-Harmon's enthusiasm. It's so great to have a connection with people who really "get" and get excited by email marketing. (Truly, there are not that many of us out there!) I count myself very lucky to have found such accomplished enthusiasts to collaborate with on the REI program. They are helping to bring amazing opportunities to fruition with panache.
