AM Inbox: Who's crazy enough to relaunch their site in the middle of December?
The Retail Email Blog monitors the email marketing campaigns of more than 100 top online retailers. Here are highlights from my inbox this morning:
Staples, 12/14 — Check out our new look!
I really like the overlay treatment that Staples uses to show off the new look of their website. I haven’t seen anyone else use this approach before and think it’s a pretty straightforward and intuitive way to explain things. On the other hand, why on earth are they changing the look of their website in the middle of the holiday season?! I pray they didn’t have any IT snafus because of this.
Overstock, 12/14 — LIQUIDATIONS + FREE SHIPPING
Overstock is the second retailer this year to mention Kwanzaa; the first was 1-800-Flowers.com in an email yesterday. As far as I know, no major retailer mentioned it last year and only Alibris mentioned it in 2007.
Ralph Lauren, 12/12 — Presenting The World's First Make Your Own Fashion Show
Ralph Lauren promotes their Make Your Own Fashion Show site in this email. Interesting concept, although the customization seems pretty narrow. Now if you could design the outfits to some degree that would be cool and much stickier.
SmartBargains, 12/12 — Best of BLACK FRIDAY COUPONS & FREE SHIPPING

SmartBargains was apparently doing a subject line A/B test with this email and had problems with the segmentation.

I love Smith-Harmon's enthusiasm. It's so great to have a connection with people who really "get" and get excited by email marketing. (Truly, there are not that many of us out there!)
